Discover why flea markets may not be the best environment for service dogs.

Learn about risks, distractions, and considerations for handlers.

1. Crowded Environment: Flea markets are often bustling with crowds, which can be overwhelming for a service dog. The dog may become stressed or anxious in such a busy atmosphere.

2. Distractions: Flea markets are filled with various sights, sounds, and smells that can distract a service dog from its duties. This could potentially compromise its ability to assist its handler effectively.

3. Unpredictable Behavior of Other Animals: Other visitors to the flea market may bring their pets along, which can lead to encounters with unfamiliar animals. This may pose a risk to the safety and focus of the service dog.

4. Risk of Injury: With so many people moving around and browsing items, there’s an increased risk of accidental tripping or stepping on the service dog, which could lead to injury.

5. Exposure to Unsanitary Conditions: Flea markets may not always maintain the cleanest environment, and the service dog may come into contact with unsanitary surfaces or substances.

6. Lack of Accommodation for the Dog: Flea markets may not be equipped to handle service dogs properly, such as providing suitable resting areas, water, or relief spots for the dog.

7. Potential Stress for the Dog: A flea market’s constant stimulation and unfamiliar surroundings could cause stress or discomfort for the service dog, which may affect its overall well-being and ability to perform its tasks.

Given these factors, it’s important for service dog handlers to carefully consider whether taking their dog to a flea market is truly necessary and in the best interest of the dog’s welfare and effectiveness in assisting its handler.

Why We Need Foster Care Givers

Become a Foster Care Giver Today!

She walked into the building trembling and shaking with fear. As a veteran, she had seen and done things that a civilian has never had to think about, and now has to deal with PTSD, TBI, or MST, which are now ruling her life. It has taken months for her to get up the courage to take this step and she couldn’t stop now.

The person greeting her at the front office was very pleasant was very pleasant and welcoming. She was escorted to the training room and greeted with warm welcomes. This was it – she was ready to start her path to a new life.

There was only one major problem that would prevent her from starting this path, she had no dog to train and the organization doing the training did not have a dog for her either.  Sadly, she could not start on the path today. After all the work and courage, it had taken her to make it this point. She would have to wait for who knows how long now, and hope her courage didn’t fail her before she got a dog to train.

This story could have had a very happy ending if K9P4P had a dog in a foster home waiting to meet their new veteran.

It is very important that a dog is available when a veteran is ready to start the program. Not every veteran matches with the first dog they meet and it may take several meetings with various dogs before there is a match.  With foster dogs available, K9P4P is able to provide a dog when needed.

K9 Foster Care Program

This is where our Foster Care Program comes in – we need wonderful families who are willing to open their homes and hearts to care for a dog who is waiting to meet their veteran.  K9P4P has many more veterans needing dogs than we have foster homes with dogs.  The majority of our dogs are rescued from kill shelters or owner surrenders. If we are not able to place these dogs in foster care they are left in the shelter or perhaps placed in a shelter by their owners.

This is where YOU come in. By being willing to open your home for a week or two (sometimes a month but rarely longer than that), there would be a dog available when a veteran needs one.

If you are willing and able to provide a foster home, please visit the Foster Care Program Page of our website and fill out the foster application.  We will be in contact with you to start the process of becoming a foster care family, and helping a veteran have a second chance at life.
