Understanding Military Sexual Trauma (MST)
Breaking the Silence, Building Support, Restoring Hope
At K9 Partners for Patriots, we are dedicated to supporting veterans living with the invisible wounds of trauma, including Military Sexual Trauma (MST)—a devastating and often misunderstood experience that affects far too many who have served.

What is Military Sexual Trauma?
Military Sexual Trauma (MST) refers to sexual assault or ongoing, threatening sexual harassment experienced during military service. MST can happen to anyone—regardless of gender, rank, or branch of service—and it can occur anywhere: on base, off base, on or off duty.
MST includes a wide range of unwanted behaviors, such as:
- Sexual harassment or repeated verbal threats of a sexual nature
- Unwanted sexual touching or advances
- Sexual assault or rape
- Pressure or coercion to engage in sexual activities
It’s not about sex—it’s about power, control, and violation.
Who is Affected by MST?
MST affects both men and women. While women report MST at higher rates, male survivors often face unique challenges, including stigma and reluctance to seek help. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs reports that:
- Approximately 1 in 3 women and 1 in 50 men using VA healthcare disclose MST experiences.
Because many incidents go unreported, these numbers only scratch the surface.

The Lasting Impact of MST
The effects of MST can be profound and far-reaching. Many survivors experience:
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Depression and anxiety
- Substance use disorders
- Chronic health problems
- Difficulty with trust, relationships, and social interactions
For some, MST leads to feelings of betrayal and isolation, especially when the assault involves fellow service members or is mishandled by the chain of command.
MST and PTSD : A Silent Battle
MST is one of the leading causes of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder among veterans, sometimes surpassing combat-related trauma. Survivors may experience:
- Nightmares and flashbacks
- Hypervigilance and irritability
- Emotional numbness
- Avoidance of reminders
Unlike physical wounds, the scars of MST are often invisible—but no less real.
Support and Healing – You Are Not Alone
No one should have to carry the burden of MST alone. The VA offers free MST-related care to all veterans, regardless of discharge status or whether they are enrolled in other VA services.
Help is available through:
- Individual and group counseling
- Specialized PTSD and MST programs
- Peer support and advocacy
At K9 Partners for Patriots, we stand alongside veterans navigating the path of healing. Our mission is to pair veterans living with PTSD, including those affected by MST, with rescue dogs trained as psychiatric service dogs—offering not only practical assistance but also unconditional support, companionship, and renewed independence.

How to Help MST Survivors
- Listen to and believe survivors without judgment.
- Encourage professional help.
- Raise awareness to break the stigma.
- Advocate for change within military and veteran systems.
